Complete demolition of the former Orb steelworks in Newport, Wales. With original buildings dating from the 1800’s, the former steelworks was once the heart of industry in Newport, and covers thirty hectares of land beside the River Usk. The large scale works included a complex 12 week asbestos removal programme, soft strip of all individual buildings including the original farmhouse, and then demolition of the numerous buildings on the site. In addition to this, excavation was required up to 12 metres deep to dig out original factory foundations, and to expose air raid shelters which were below the ground. The Orb project was also of particular environmental interest due to the need for measures to protect wildlife, such as otters, present around the area of the River Usk. Following a comprehensive 20 week demolition, the site was cleared for the development of new housing by Taylor Wimpey.
